Alcohol is the substance most frequently abused by children and adolescents in the United States. Approximately one in three high school students reported drinking alcohol (https://nccd.cdc.gov/Youthonline/App/Default.aspx).
Drug and alcohol use are strongly associated with the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in adolescence (National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2014).
Adolescent Substance Use in Illinois
The national Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) is a cross sectional, biennial, school-based survey of 9th-12th grade students in the United States that monitors the prevalence of health risk behaviors.
Over half of adolescents surveyed reported using alcohol at least once in their lifetime.
